Introducing LanesMac

The first release of LanesMac: every window side by side on one horizontal strip, with spring animations, trackpad swipes and a full set of keyboard shortcuts.

Window Management

  • One horizontal strip of full-height columns that grows as you open windows.
  • New windows open next to the focused column, and existing windows keep their size.
  • Stacks: put two or three windows in one column, with adjustable gaps.
  • Apps that can't shrink enough for a stack stay beside it, with a note explaining why.
  • Tabbed columns that give each window in a stack the full height.
  • Pin a window, such as chat or music, to the left or right edge of the screen.
  • Preset widths from the keyboard: cycle, wider, narrower and centre.

Navigation & Gestures

  • Spring-based scrolling that starts the moment you press a key.
  • Two-finger sideways swipe moves the strip. Hold Option (⌥) to scroll inside the app instead.
  • Optional three- or four-finger swipes, turned on in Settings > Motion.
  • Keyboard shortcuts for every action, with Vim-style H, J, K and L as alternatives to the arrows.
  • Jump straight to windows 1 to 9 with ⌃⌥1–9.

Displays & Workspaces

  • A separate strip for each display. Send a window to the next display with ⌃⌥N.
  • Overview (⌃⌥O) and window search (⌃⌥Space) to find any open window quickly.
  • A menu bar indicator showing where you are on the strip, such as “3 of 8”.
  • Optional focus border and dimming for windows that don't have focus.

Power Tools & Automation

  • Per-app rules to always float an app or open it at a set width.
  • Session restore brings your columns back after you log in or restart.
  • Export and import workspace layouts as JSON files.
  • The lanesmac command-line tool for scripting, loading layouts and flagging columns when a job finishes.
  • A lanesmac:// URL scheme for launchers and scripts.
  • Quitting LanesMac puts every window back where it was.

Privacy & Licensing

  • Accessibility is the only permission LanesMac asks for.
  • No telemetry, no analytics and no accounts. LanesMac goes online only to activate a license once and when you check for updates.
  • 24 hours of free access after the first launch, with every feature included. After activation, LanesMac works offline.
